What did we do today?
- Left Punta Uva at 7am to drive to Bijagua
- Night hike at Tapir Valley Nature Reserve in Bijagua
Meals: we made our own breakfast and then ate snacks all day
It took about 6 hours to drive from Punta Uva to Bijagua. The only really unpleasant section was route 32 from Limon to Gaupiles. It was almost a cloudless day and for the first time, I could clearly see all the volcanoes and mountains we passed right up to Bijagua.
Shortly after checking in to Friendship House at Bijagua, we drove up the road towards Tenorio National Park for a night hike at the private Tapir Valley Nature Reserve. Unlike our visit in 2020, we sadly did not see any Tapirs, but we did see snakes, night birds, and three tarantulas.
Reviews:
Friendship House is another one of those gems I would like to keep secret. Set high up on the side of the mountain you have expansive views out over the valley towards Miravalle Volcano. Set on 10 acres, there are private trails teeming with birds and wildlife. We loved watching the Toucans that rest in the trees a stone's throw from the verandah. The house has 2-bedrooms, one bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen, and a washing machine. There is no need for AC as there are constant cool breezes blowing through the house. I even slept with a blanket.
Tapir Valley Nature Reserve: Tapir Valley is a private nature reserve, and a night hike here is your best chance at spotting a Tapir in Bijagua. On this trip, we did not see a Tapir, but the other group on the same night did. There are no guarantees with wild animals. They offer both night and day-guided hikes.
